¿Que son los NFT?

Los nonfungible tokens, o “NFT”, son obras digitales no fungibles, y por tanto únicas, verificadas a través de blockchain – en general utilizan Ethereum como tecnología blockchain - y por tanto únicas y originales.
Esto significa que cualquier imagen, fotografía, video o canción, pueda certificarse como original y por tanto venderse como una obra única. Asimismo, tampoco pueden borrarse ni falsificarse, reafirmando entonces alNFT como un activo único.
Esto no quiere decir que el token no pueda ser compartido libremente por internet. Existen NFT en forma de videos, fotos o GIFs que son ampliamente compartidos en la web diariamente; pero lo que diferencia al NFTde una simple imagen o video, es que pueden certificarse como la obra original y allí radica su valor y definición de “no fungible”.

What are NFTs?

Non-fungible tokens, or "NFTs", are non-fungible, and therefore unique, digital artworks, verified through blockchain – in general using Ethereum as the blockchain technology – andhence unique and original.
This means that any image, photograph, video or song, can be certified as original and thus be sold as a unique work. Likewise, they cannot either be deleted or counterfeited, thus reaffirming the NFT as a unique asset.
This does not mean that the token cannot be freely shared on the Internet. There are NFTs in the form of videos, photos or GIFs that are widely shared on the web on a daily basis; but what differentiates the NFT from a simple image or video is that they can be certified as the original work and therein lies their value and definition of "non-fungible".

En marzo pasado, el co-fundador de Twitter, Jack Dorsey, vendió el primer tweet en la red social por 2,9 millones de dólares (o 1.630 ethers) a un empresario de origen malayo. A la fecha, el tweet se mantiene en la red, para el acceso de cualquiera que pueda ingresar, tomar una foto del mismo, y compartirlo.
La clave de esto, es que SinaEstavi, quien adquirió el NFT, puede ahora reclamar propiedad sobre el mismo y certificar dicha propiedad como un activo original.
A la fecha, la mayor compra de un NFT tomó lugar a través de una subasta realizada por Christie´s el 11 de marzo pasado, donde se subastó por 69,3 millones de dólares – la transacción se realizó a través de pago vía crypto moneda - una obra digital del artista y diseñador gráfico Mike Winkelmann conocido como Beeple. Dicha imagen, una colección de sus obras creadas en los últimos 13 años, conocida como “Los primeros 5.000 días”, fue subastada como la primera obra de arte digital rematada por una de las casas de subasta más importantes del mundo.
Posteriormente, entre el 12 y el 14 de abril, Sotheby´s recaudó 17 millones de dólares en su primera subasta de arte digital.

Last March, Twitter co-founder, Jack Dorsey, sold the first tweet on the social network for 2.9 million dollars (or 1,630 ethers) to a Malaysian entrepreneur. To date, the tweet remains on the network, for access by anyone who can log in, take a picture of it, and share it.
The key to this is that SinaEstavi, who acquired the NFT, can now claim its ownership and certify that ownership as an original asset.
To this date, the largest purchase of a NFT was made through an auction held by Christie's on March 11, where a digital work of art created by artist and graphic designer Mike Winkelmann known as Beeple, was auctioned for 69.3 million dollars - the transaction was paid via cryptocurrency. That image, a collection of his works created over the past 13 years, known as "The First 5000 Days", was sold as the first digital artwork auctioned by one of the world's leading auction houses.
Subsequently, between April 12 and 14, Sotheby's raised 17 million dollars in its first digital art auction.

Esto no pasó desapercibido para muchas empresas y organizaciones que han creado plataformas para vender NFTs. Empresas han unido fuerzas con organizaciones como la NBA y UFC para crear videos únicos y originales que luego se comercializan en plataformas especializadas. Nike y Formula 1 han comenzado también a generar sus propios NFTs.
El atractivo del NFT y la tecnología blockchain resulta claramente de la facilidad para el vendedor de acceder al comprador en forma directa. Adicionalmente, puede programarse dicho NFT para que el creador reciba futuras ganancias sobre ventas sucesivas del mismo activo. En muchos casos además se acompaña el NFT de beneficios adicionales que acompañan el token digital: músicos de fama internacional han vendido canciones en forma de NFT acompañando la compra con tickets de por vida para sus conciertos o discos físicos de edición limitada al comprador del token digital.

This did not go unnoticed by many companies and organizations that have created platforms to sell NFTs. Companies have joined forces with organizations such as the NBA and UFC to create unique and original videos that are then marketed on specialized platforms. Nike and Formula 1 have also started to create their own NFTs.
The attractiveness of NFT and blockchain technology clearly results from the ease for the seller to access the buyer directly. Additionally, the NFT can be programmed so that the creator receives future profits on successive sales of the same asset. In many cases, the NFT is also accompanied by additional benefits that accompany the digital token: internationally renowned musicians have sold songs in the form of NFTs, accompanying the purchase with lifetime tickets to their concerts or limited edition physical albums for the use of the purchaser of the digital token.

¿Que se necesita para invertir en NFTs?

En principio es necesario una wallet digital, que permita almacenar NFTs y cryptomonedas. Asimismo, requiere una inversión en cryptomonedas para adquirir dichos NFTs. Actualmente hay muchísimas empresas que ofrecen wallets digitales a través de softwares y aplicaciones que permiten invertir en cryptomonedas. Estas últimas pueden adquirirse a través de plataformas de exchange como Coinbase y Kraken.
Finalmente, los NFTs pueden adquirirse en diversos sitios que actúan como Marketplaces que a la fecha se estima manejan un mercado de más de 338 millones de dólares y registraron en el año 2020 más de 250 millones de dólares en trades.

What is needed to invest in NFT’s?

In principle, you need a digital wallet, which allows you to store NFTs and cryptocurrencies. It also requires an investment in cryptocurrencies to acquire these NFTs. There are currently many companies that offer digital wallets through software and applications which allow investing in cryptocurrencies. The latter can be acquired through exchange platforms such as Coinbase and Kraken.
Finally, NFTs can be acquired in various sites that act as marketplaces which to date are estimated to handle a market of more than 338 million dollars and registered in 2020 more than 250 million dollars in trades.

Otro punto a tener en cuenta es que toda transacción en Ethereum, tecnología utilizada en general para crear estos NFTs, requiere el pago de una comisión (“Gas Fees”), la que debe pagarse en Ether. Esto permite mantener las transacciones en forma segura, ya que evita el uso indebido de la red y la sobrecarga por spam. Cabe destacar que los costos del “Gas Fee” dependerán de la plataforma utilizada e incluso puede fluctuar durante las horas del día.
Actualmente los NFTs se encuentran en auge para inversionistas en todo el mundo, no solo para coleccionistas. Esto se ha traducido en un mercado creciente para aquellos que inicialmente impulsaron el mercado de las cryptomonedas, así como también para organizaciones deportivas, empresas y las grandes casas de subastas; pero enfocándose no solo en los amantes del arte, sino todo aquel interesado en artículos coleccionables, el deporte, entre otros.

Another point to keep in mind is that every transaction in Ethereum, technology used in general to create these NFTs, requires the payment of a commission ("Gas Fees"), which must be paid in Ether. This allows keeping transactions secure, as it avoids network misuse and spamming overload. It should be noted that the costs of the "Gas Fee" will depend on the platform used and may even fluctuate throughout the day.
NFTs are currently booming for investors around the world, not just collectors. This has translated into a growing market for those who initially boosted the cryptocurrency market, as well as for sports organizations, companies and large auction houses; but focusing not only on art lovers, but on anyone interested in collectibles, sports, and many others.
